Arsenal's hopes of winning its first piece of silverware in six seasons came to a crashing halt in amazing fashion on Sunday, as goalie Wojciech Szczesny's late gaffe gave Birmingham's Obafemi Martins "the easiest goal of his career," which proved to be the game winner.
Unsurprisingly, the Gunners, who have failed to solve their goalkeeping issues for a matter of years, have again been linked with Liverpool's Pepe Reina in the wake of the incident, according to a Daily Star report.
Reina, who has sent mixed signals about his Anfield future this season, has also been linked to a move to Old Trafford, given Edwin Van der Sar's impending retirement. However, according to a Spanish source close to Reina, The Emirates is his "probable destination."
The Spanish keeper has said that playing Champions League football is important to him, and with Liverpool's prospects of such for 2011-12 relatively slim, his future at Anfield has further been cast in doubt.
Like Fernando Torres, Reina is said to have an escape clause in his contract that could allow him to make a move, though his agent, Manuel Garcia Quilon, is said to be negotiating a new contract with Liverpool with wages upwards of £110,000 per week.
The quoted transfer fee that Arsenal would pay is £20 million. Paying such a sum, however, would be a departure from Arsenal's usual transfer strategy.
