Chad Pennington Tears ACL While Playing Pickup Basketball Pretty soon, pickup basketball will be banned for all athletes outside of the sport.

Free agent quarterback Chad Pennington is the latest to encounter a frustrating injury at the hands of a friendly afternoon game of hoops. In a news release on Thursday, Pennington's agent announced that his client tore his ACL while playing a game of pickup and will undergo surgery on April 7, the Associated Press reports.

This, of course, is not the first time an athlete has incurred such an injury. Red Sox villain Aaron Boone tore his ACL while playing pickup basketball just three months after his 11th-inning home run sent the Sox packing in the 2003 ALCS. Boone bounced around to four different teams after the injury before retiring in 2010.

The knee injury comes at a rather difficult time for Pennington, as he is looking to bounce back in 2011 after a rough two seasons. The eight-year veteran has played just four games over the past two years with Miami due to persistent issues with his right shoulder. Pennington underwent his fourth shoulder surgery in the 2010 offseason, hoping for a comeback in 2011.

The news release issued by Pennington's agent did not disclose which knee has been injured, but said the surgery will be performed by well-known surgeon Dr. James Andrews.
