The Chicago Cubs placed outfielder Marlon Byrd on the 15-day disabled list one day after he was hit in the face by a pitch from Red Sox right-hander Alfredo Aceves.

Byrd was diagnosed with multiple facial fractures after the pitch caught him just below his left eye in the second inning of Saturday night's meeting between the two teams. Byrd spent the night in a local hospital and was released Sunday afternoon.

"That's scary what happened," Boston manager Terry Francona said Sunday afternoon. "I don't care what uniform you're in, that makes you nervous."

Justin Berg, a right-handed pitcher, was recalled from Triple-A Iowa to take Byrd's spot on the roster. With Matt Garza scratched from his scheduled start and reliever James Russell taking the mound Sunday night, Chicago's bullpen could be taxed. Berg will provide one more arm for manager Mike Quade.

Byrd is hitting .308 with three home runs and 11 RBIs in 44 games this season.
