Report: ‘Winnipeg Whiteout’ Franchise Name a Hoax, Team Likely to Be Called ‘Winnipeg Jets’

The call for the return of hockey in Winnipeg has been answered. With months before the 2011-12 season begins, speculation concerning the team has already begun.

Take the name of the team for example.

True Sports North and Entertainment had changed the name to the Winnipeg Whiteout, according to winnipegwhiteout.com.

Given the long history of the Jets in the city of Winnipeg, TSNE wanted to start a new hockey tradition that honored the Jets but also built a foundation for a new legacy of Winnipeg hockey, the website said.

However, winnipegwhiteout.com quickly annouced the naming hoax following the original post.

After TSNE bought the trademark for "Whiteout," speculation began on the new name. Whiteouts at Winnipeg hockey games have been a tradition since the Jets playing days, and the trademark registration seemed like a logical explanation for a new name.

The trademark, however, was done to protect that tradition, and the website speculated that the ownership group will name the team the Jets.
