The NHL has decided that the Heritage Classic will not take place next year, according to ESPN.com.The Heritage Classic may return in 2012-13, but it will definitely not be held next year.

The Heritage Classic, a regular-season NHL game played outdoors in Canada, has taken place twice before. The event debuted in 2003 when the Edmonton Oilers hosted the Montreal Canadiens, marking the first time an outdoor game counted in the regular-season standings.

The removal of the Heritage Classic means the NHL will have only one outdoor game next year — the Winter Classic, which has been taking place since 2008.

The Calgary Flames hosted the Canadiens for the second Heritage Classic in February 2011. The Flames defeated the Canadiens 1-0.
