Los Angeles Angels ace Jered Weaver has been chosen as the American League's starting pitcher for Tuesday's All-Star Game in Arizona, AL manager Ron Washington announced Sunday morning.

Weaver, who carries an 11-4 record and a league-leading 1.86 ERA into the break, was chosen instead of Detroit's Justin Verlander because the Tigers ace pitched on Sunday, making him ineligible to pitch in Arizona on Tuesday.

The same rule affected Weaver last season, when he was selected to the All-Star team for the first time in his career but was unable to play after pitching for the Angels on Sunday.

Tuesday will be the 28-year-old's first appearance in the Midsummer Classic, and he will become the first Angels hurler to start an All-Star Game since Mark Langston in 1993.
