Muggsy Bogues Says Mark Cuban Honored Final Three Years of Contract Even After Guard Retired

Muggsy Bogues was traded to the Dallas Mavericks before the 2001-02 season, but when his mother passed away, the former guard was too distraught to continue his career.

Naturally, Bogues figured the final three years of his contract would be bought out by Mavericks owner Mark Cuban, and thus wouldn't get the money for those years.

However, even though Bogues never set foot on the court wearing a Mavs uniform, Cuban decided to pay out the rest of the three years on the contract — or, roughly $3.6 million.

"I've never met Mr. Mark Cuban, but I tell people I thank him more than life itself," Bogues told Slam Magazine. "I had three years left on my contract when my mom passed away and I decided it was time to move on [from basketball]. I walked away from the game with three years left on my contract.

"He could have easily just have bought me out of my contract, but he went on and honored it and paid the three years out and never looked back."

Unsurprisingly, Bogues is now a huge fan of Cuban. Despite the fact that he's never actually met the Dallas owner, he applauds Cuban's kindness.

"I was never able to thank Cuban in person for that, but I do thank him."
