Andy Carroll Says Game-Winning Goal in Merseyside Derby the Greatest Moment of His Liverpool Career So Far Since joining Liverpool for a record £35 million ($54.2 million) transfer in January 2011, Andy Caroll has come under much scrutiny and criticism. He silenced some of those critics by scoring the winner in Saturday’s Merseyside derby and dedicated the goal to his supporters.

He told LiverpoolFC.tv, “The goal is for everyone really, Kenny, the other lads and the fans. Everyone who has stood by me. It is a great feeling but it doesn’t really matter who scores the goals as long as we get the three points and I thought it was great we did it here. This is by far the highlight of my time here, easily.”

Carroll’s strike in the 71st minute was his first in English Premier League play this season and his second in all competitions.

He’s struggled for form and fitness since moving to Anfield and teammates, coaches and supporters all hope there is more to come from the 22-year-old England international.

A thigh injury kept him out of action for the first month of his Liverpool career. He scored twice in a 3-0 victory over Manchester City in April, but failed to score again for the club during the 2010-11 season.

His goal against Exeter City in an August Carling Cup game was his lone strike so far this season, but manager Kenny Dalglish has remained steadfast in supporting him. Carroll’s contract runs until 2016, so he will have plenty of time to win over his skeptics. The derby goal will go a long way towards doing that.
