U.S. Baseball Team Shocks Cuba at Pan-Am Games, But Canada Comes Away With Gold Medal

The U.S. baseball team made history at the Pan-Am games, not by winning gold, but by taking out Cuba, the 10-time defending champions.

This was made possible in large part due to the faulty pitching that plagued the Cubans from the start of the tournament, something that allowed the Americans to take an early 12-4 lead they milked to victory by the final score of 12-10.

Regardless, this great accomplishment was not enough to get them the gold medal, as Canada, the other great surprise of the tournament, defeated them 2-1 to win gold. The pitching of Andy Van Hekken could not overcome the pitching of the Canadian Andrew Albers, who outdueled Van Hekken in the final.

Making history was not enough for the United States to retain the title of favorites in the final against Canada who fulfilled its Cinderella run in the tournament.
