Madison Granger, a senior at Belchertown High School, has been selected as the recipient of the MIAA/NESN Student-Athlete of the Month Award for September 2011.

The award is given to an outstanding student-athlete for excelling in athletics, academics and community service.

Granger serves as team captain of the Belchertown High School girls cross country team and initiates and runs the team stretching program each day, as well as team-building and goal-setting meetings on a regular basis with her teammates. She has finished among the top six runners in the MIAA Western Massachusetts Championship Meet for each of her first three varsity seasons and she currently holds a number of local course records.

Academically, Granger is a standout as well, with a rigorous academic course load. She has also received seven academic awards at the Belchertown High School undergraduate awards night, including the Smith College Book Award and the Rensselaer Medal Award. In addition to her academic and athletic success, Granger is the Belchertown High School Student Council, Model Congress and the Youth Advisory Board that gives presentations about Internet safety to first- and second-graders in the district.

Madison stays near the end of the race to encourage and motivate the rest of her team to finish with their best effort, which includes over 25 girls of varying abilities, as well as her opponents,” said Belchertown High School athletic director Robert Marchewka. “For these reasons, Madison is also the consummate teammate and opponent, in addition to being the top runner in nearly every race.”
