United Way Apparently Supports Detroit Fans Rallying to Ban Nickelback From Thanksgiving Halftime Show

In mixed company, most people like to shy away from discussing politics and religion, as those controversial topics can spark heated arguments between complete strangers and lead to guests making abrupt, angry exits from the dinner party.

Even those topics can pale in comparison to a conversation about music, though. Lock a country fan in a room with a grunge rock fan and the insults will fly. Ask a Jay-Z loyalist and a Nas supporter to debate which MC is greater and they’ll have to be separated.

At least one topic, however, seems to unite the world: That Nickelback is really, truly, embarrassingly awful.

Nickelback is booked as the halftime performance to benefit the United Way during the Detroit Lions’ Thanksgiving game against the Packers, and fans have come together in the shared goal of stopping this injustice from taking place. A fan petition seeking to ban Nickelback from Ford Field has attracted for than 75,000 signatures.

That, apparently, is good enough for the United Way, though the organization sponsoring the halftime show is sticking with Nickelback.

“This is a call to action, an invitation for everyone to join us, regardless of their stance on various issues, to move forward on creating opportunities for a better life for all,” United Way publicity director Sal Fabens wrote, according to MTV.com. “It’s going to take everyone working together … to make progress on ambitious goals in the areas of education, income and health across the country. … We invite varying points of view and voices to all come together so we can move forward.”

In other words, band together for whatever reason, as long as we band together. Also, banning Nickelback could improve “education, income and health across the country.”

Sounds about right.

All right, so he can’t throw, but Tim Tebow goes out of his way to shake hands with members of the military while exiting the tunnel to the field while everyone else just walks past. That’s worth something, right?
