If he has his way, Mumuni Abubakar will be the first-ever player to move directly from Ghana’s GLO Premier League to the England’s top flight. ESPN reports the 18-year-old midfielder completed a ten-day trial with Liverpool, and hopes to make a January move to Anfield.

“They were impressed by my performances during training and the match that I played,” Abubakar reportedly told Joy Sports. “The technical team like my style of play, so hopefully they will sign me.

“When you go to trials, they talk to your agent and not you the player. Liverpool is talking with my agent [Oliver Arthur] now. They’re impressed with my performances so we should get a favourable response.”

The defensive midfielder is the captain of his club — fifth place New Edubiase United — and won the GLO Premier League Player of the Year award. Abubakar also represents Ghana at the U-20 level.

He caught the attention of Liverpool’s scouts in a November friendly between Italian club Parma and New Edubiase United. It is now up to to the Reds to determine the player’s immediate future.

Players often move from African to European clubs at bargain-basement prices, so LFC could sign him for a modest fee.
