'Footsteps of Our Fathers': Dave Kirby Starts Liverpool's March to Wembley With Poetic Tour de Force (Video)Tens of thousands of Liverpool fans will travel to London this weekend to support their team in the Carling Cup final. The journey to Wembley Stadium, the spiritual home of English soccer, will be long. But Dave Kirby‘s poem, Footsteps of Our Fathers, explains just how familiar the trip will be.

Kirby’s poem tells the tale of LFC’s rich history with the iconic venue. The Reds have descended on Wembley for Cup finals since the FA Cup decider in 1950.

That day ended in a 2-0 defeat to Arsenal, but the Reds left the field in glory 15 years later. On May 1, 1965, LFC lifted the FA Cup for the first time in its history. In 30 years ranging from 1965-95, the Reds made the pilgrimage to Wembley on a number of occasions.

But the old venue was torn down in the early 2000s, and took years to rebuild. LFC collected its silverware at the Millenium Stadium in Cardiff, Wales during that time.

The new Wembley finally opened in 2007, but the Reds have not participated in a cup final in recent years … until now. Sunday’s final sees LFC return to a familiar place.

Liverpool players and fans will travel on roads that are well-paved by “the footsteps of our fathers”.
