FIFA Fingers Joao Havelange and Ricardo Teixeira in World Cup Kickbacks ScandalTwo kingpins of Brazilian and international soccer, Joao Havelange and Ricardo Teixeira, received bribes worth up to $22 million in a kickbacks scandal.

FIFA released court documents that show the two Brazilian executives were paid millions by FIFA's former marketing company, ISL, between 1992-2000, according to the BBC. ISL collapsed into bankruptcy in 2001.

"Havelange received at least 1.5 million Swiss francs [£986,000 or $1.5 million] and executive committee member Ricardo Teixeira at least 12.74 million [£8.4 million or $13 million]," the BBC report says.

"The Swiss prosecutor's report, published by Fifa, reveals they may have received up to 21.9 million Swiss francs. The pair are the only two Fifa officials named in the report."

The Swiss supreme court ordered the release of documents pertaining to the case. The papers reveal the terms of the settlement that ended a criminal investigation into the collapse of ISL.

Havelange repaid 5.5 million Swiss francs (£3.6 million or $5.5 million) in order to keep his involvement secret, but it has now come to light. The identities of other senior figures who recieved payments remain anonymous.

Havelange, 96, served as FIFA president from 1974-1998. He was also a member of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) for 48 years before stepping down in December. He left the IOC days before it was due to suspend him for his role in the ISL scandal.

Teixeira, Havelange's former son-in-law, was the president of the Brazilian soccer federation (CBF) for 23 years before he resigned in March. He cited health concerns as his reason for leaving the CBF, but he faces mounting charges of corruption at home and abroad.
