Wayne Rooney’s play epitomized the sacred and the profane Saturday.

Rooney scored a milestone goal for Manchester United in his team’s 2-1 win over West Ham, but he wasn’t able to celebrate either triumph on the field with his teammates. Rooney was dismissed early in the second half.

First came the good.

Rooney opened the scoring in the fifth minute when he charged forward to meet Rafael’s cross and beat West Ham goalkeeper Adrian with a slick finish.

The goal moved Rooney above Arsenal legend Thierry Henry into third place in the Premier League’s all-time leading scorers’ list.

Now, the obscene.

Rooney was sent off in the 59th minute for violent conduct. Rooney needlessly kicked Stewart Downing, as the West Ham midfielder was trying to launch a counter-attack.

Rooney will be suspended for Manchester United’s next three games. This was Rooney’s first red card in the Premier League since March 2009, but it ruined what should have been a glorious one for the Manchester United star.
