Here we are, less than a week from the Super Bowl, and there are still those who feel the New England Patriots should be removed from the big game.

More than 40,000 people, in fact, feel so strongly that they took the time to sign an online petition to get New England out of the Super Bowl for its alleged role in the ongoing DeflateGate saga.

The petition’s title reads “Immediately disqualify Patriots and replay AFC Championship between the Colts and Ravens.” According to Sporting News, the petition was started by (surprise, surprise) a Baltimore native named Scott Latshaw.

“To maintain the legitimacy of this year’s NFL Championship the Patriots should be immediately disqualified and the two teams they beat to advance should be allowed to continue with the playoff process,” he wrote as part of the petition. “The AFC championship should be replayed to determine a rightful representative for the AFC in this year’s Super Bowl.”

Latshaw compared this controversy to one of the biggest controversies in sports history.

“They can’t go through with this mutlti-billion dollar event and have it tainted like that,” he told Sporting News. “This is the Black Sox all over again.”

Uh, right. The petition had nearly 41,000 supporters as of Tuesday morning.
