The New England Patriots could be ready to move on from Shane Vereen.

The Patriots have shown interest in Roy Helu, another pass-catching free-agent running back, during the legal tampering period, a source told the Providence Journal’s Mark Daniels on Monday.

Helu caught 42 passes for 477 yards with two touchdowns last season with the Washington Redskins. He added 40 carries for 216 yards and one TD on the ground.

Helu has better career numbers than Vereen, though the Patriot is known as a more versatile receiver. Helu has spent his entire four-year career with the Redskins since being a fourth-round pick in the 2011 NFL draft.
