The New England Patriots wasted no time dealing with Brandon Spikes.

The Patriots released the linebacker Monday morning after a car registered to Spikes was found abandoned on I-495 in Foxboro, Mass., on Sunday morning. According to Massachusetts State Police, an OnStar representative told police the driver of the car reported hitting a deer.

No deer was found near the scene, and not long after, police received another call of a reported hit and run. Three passengers in a Nissan Murano were taken to the hospital and treated for injuries.

Spikes, who played five seasons with the Patriots to begin his career, played the 2014 season with the Buffalo Bills. He returned to New England, signing with the Patriots less than a month ago on May 18.
