DeMarcus Cousins and George Karl just took the awkward handshake game to another level.

Cousins was in Las Vegas on Monday to watch his Sacramento Kings take on the Golden State Warriors in an NBA Summer League game. The Kings center was sitting courtside, just minding his own business, when he received quite the unexpected visit from his head coach.

What happened next was cringeworthy.

It’s clear Cousins just wants to go for the quick handshake here, but Karl doesn’t let go, making the big man awkwardly stand up so everyone can see the two together.

We can’t blame Cousins for wanting nothing to do with this exchange. Cousins and Karl reportedly never have seen eye-to-eye since Karl took over as head coach in February, and reports surfaced in June that Karl was trying to run the All-Star center out of town. That prompted a biting Twitter response from Cousins and created even more tension for a team that’s already dealing with plenty of drama.

Speaking of drama, new Kings point guard and former Boston Celtic Rajon Rondo also was in attendance Monday. It’s safe to say things were a little less awkward.
