Hulk Hogan, one of the biggest pop culture stars over the last 30 years, was brought to his knees Friday.

The former professional wrestling superstar came under fire after his contract was terminated by World Wrestling Entertainment for racist comments he made about his daughter Brooke’s boyfriend. Hogan, who says he made the comments eight years ago, issued a formal apology to People magazine just a few hours after the termination was announced.

“Eight years ago I used offensive language during a conversation. It was unacceptable for me to have used that offensive language; there is no excuse for it; and I apologize for having done it,” Hogan told People. “This is not who I am. I believe very strongly that every person in the world is important and should not be treated differently based on race, gender, orientation, religious beliefs or otherwise. I am disappointed with myself that I used language that is offensive and inconsistent with my own beliefs.”

In a statement to ABC News, WWE publicly denounced Hogan’s comments.

“WWE terminated its contract with Terry Bollea (a.k.a. Hulk Hogan),” the statement read. “WWE is committed to embracing and celebrating individuals from all backgrounds as demonstrated by the diversity of our employees, performers and fans worldwide.”

David Houston, Hogan’s lawyer, contends his client resigned from WWE “because he didn’t want to put them or his family through this,” according to People.

WWE removed all instances of Hogan’s name from its website Friday morning, including stripping his name from the WWE Hall of Fame. Additionally, Hogan’s name was removed from the “Tough Enough” show judge panel, and it’s unclear at this point who will replace Hogan on the reality show.
