The Boston Red Sox need to improve, and David Ortiz wants to help.

The Red Sox’s designated hitter is in his 13th season with the team, so he’s more than a little familiar with how things are run on an everyday basis. Ortiz said the team “definitely (has) to regroup” next year, and he’d like baseball operations to get his input before adding players.

“I pretty much see everything around here and how everything functions,” Ortiz said, per the Boston Herald. “It’s good for the organization sometimes to let us play a part in the decisions they make. But at the end of the day, they are the ones who make the decisions and make the moves.”

The 39-year-old Ortiz likely is nearing retirement, but he’d be far from the first former Red Sox to land a job with the team if he does get his wish. In fact, former catcher Jason Varitek and former pitcher Pedro Martinez currently work as special assistants to general manager Ben Cherington.

And Ortiz said he already helps where he can.

“In the offseason, whenever there’s someone available out there and I think he can help us out, I’m not afraid to pick up the phone and either talk to that person or talk to our GM about that,” Ortiz said. “But like I said, they know more than we do.”

Ortiz knows he can’t do it all, though, and said he trusts the financial decisions the front office makes. Still, he knows that he’s going to end up with some new teammates in 2016, regardless of whether he gets a say in the matter.
