Patriots Fill Receiver, Returner Depth With Reported KeShawn Martin Trade

FOXBORO, Mass. — Just when you think you have the all the answers, the New England Patriots change the question.

After reportedly acquiring wide receiver KeShawn Martin in a trade with the Houston Texans, we’re no longer wondering when Kenbrell Thompkins will be signed to the Patriots’ active roster but how their new addition will fit into the offense.

The answer: He might not.

Martin mostly was used as a return specialist with the Houston Texans, bringing back 86 punts in three seasons for 766 yards and a touchdown. He also returned 68 kicks for 1,707 yards and only caught 38 passes for 416 yards with three scores.

It was wise for the Patriots to add another returner to their roster, since their starting wide receivers, Julian Edelman and Danny Amendola, currently handle punt duties. Week 1 starting running back, and third-down specialist, Dion Lewis returned kicks against the Pittsburgh Steelers. It’s extremely important to keep Edelman and Amendola healthy until Brandon LaFell comes off the PUP list, since they’re the only dependable receivers on the roster.

Martin primarily was used as a slot receiver in 2013, his most productive season as a wideout, when he caught 22 passes for 253 yards with two touchdowns. Martin provides additional depth in the slot or in the “Z” receiver role, both of which are extremely important in the Patriots’ offense. Martin knows the basics of the offense after spending a season and-a-half with former Patriots offensive coordinator Bill O’Brien on the Texans, which obviously helps.

Acquiring Martin shouldn’t preclude the Patriots from bringing Thompkins off the practice squad, either. Aaron Dobson currently is the Patriots’ lone “X” receiver, and if Martin is mostly used on special teams, they could use more depth outside at wideout.

The Patriots have been in the market for another veteran wide receiver since training camp. Martin isn’t a high-profile acquisition, but he adds important depth in multiple roles.
