The Seattle Seahawks are facing the possibility of losing Marshawn Lynch for the rest of the regular season.

The star running back, who’s battling an abdominal injury, was a late scratch for Sunday’s Week 11 win over the San Francisco 49ers despite the fact head coach Pete Carroll believed he would be good to go. Now, it looks as though that injury might be worse than anyone thought.

“We’re going to try to take care of him, he’s going to make a trip to go see (a specialist) out in Philadelphia to see if we can figure out what’s going on,” Carroll said, per the team’s website. “It’s an abdominal issue, there’s a lot going on there, so we’ve got to see what that all means.”

Carroll wouldn’t rule out the possibility of a sports hernia or surgery and said the Seahawks would know more by Wednesday.

“These injuries — I’ve been around a lot of them — and they have a way of being really difficult to figure out from the outside,” Carroll said. “The surgery thing is always an option in there, and there are some other things they’ll take a look at. It’s hard to detect what it is at this point. The specialist will let us know more.”

Surgery would put Lynch out for the rest of the regular season, which wouldn’t bode well for a Seattle team that’s currently out of the playoff picture at 5-5. Replacement Thomas Rawls blew up for 255 yards and two touchdowns on 33 touches Sunday, but that was against one of the NFL’s worst run defenses in the 49ers.

Lynch has 417 yards, three touchdowns and is averaging 3.8 yards per carry this season. He previously missed Weeks 3 and 4 with a hamstring issue and was limited in Week 10 with the abdominal injury.
