It’s a good thing Chelsea midfielder Nemanja Matic still is suspended. Otherwise, this story would be even more embarrassing.

Matic injured his ankle Sunday while celebrating Chelsea’s win over Tottenham in the Capital One Cup final at Wembley Stadium. Matic didn’t play in the game due to suspension, but the injury bug bit him anyway.

Matic, No. 21 in the video, was participating in a celebratory slide with his teammates when he rolled his ankle on the turf.

Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho revealed Matic’s injury Wednesday and said the Serbian would be fit to face Paris Saint-Germain in the UEFA Champions League on March 11.

“He got an injury celebrating the cup,” Mourinho said, according to Sky Sports. “It’s not a big injury, but if he was not suspended, he wouldn’t play.

“He twisted his ankle. On the pitch. He put on shinpads but he didn’t put the tape on. He will play against Paris. On Saturday, Sunday, he will train.”

Matic joins Hull City’s Robbie Brady on the list of soccer’s strangest injuries in recent times. Brady fell down a hole and damaged his calf Friday during practice at his team’s facility. While the circumstances surrounding Brady’s injury remain a mystery, Matic’s misfortune is there for all to see.
