UPDATE (2:45 p.m. ET): The New England Patriots confirmed they have released cornerback E.J. Biggers, running back Donald Brown and defensive lineman Frank Kearse.

ORIGINAL STORY: The New England Patriots have cut ties with three veterans, according to multiple reports Tuesday morning.

NFL Media’s Ian Rapoport first reported, citing a source, that the team had released seventh-year pro E.J. Biggers, who was battling the likes of Jonathan Jones, Cre’Von LeBlanc and Darryl Roberts for the final roster spot at cornerback. A source confirmed this report to Mark Daniels of the Providence Journal.

Minutes later, a source told ESPN’s Field Yates the Patriots had jettisoned running back Donald Brown and defensive lineman Frank Kearse as well.

Brown had been limited in practice since suffering an injury early in training camp and has yet to play in the preseason, and Kearse failed to separate himself in New England’s deep and talented D-line group. Brown received an injury settlement from the team, a source told the Boston Herald’s Jeff Howe.

The Patriots now have seven open spots on their 90-man roster, which they must trim to 75 players by Aug. 30.
