The Patriots could use a linebacker to pair with Jerod Mayo. Will the team sign Antonio Pierce?

According to The Boston Globe, the Patriots may consider Pierce, who was released by the Giants but could be a solid defensive option next season for a unit in desperate need of upgrades.

Pierce has recorded at least 72 tackles in five of his last six seasons. The veteran provides the consistent play on the field the team missed last season following the departures of Tedy Bruschi and Rodney Harrison.

In addition, Pierce could provide leadership in the Patriots' locker room. The linebacker was a vocal captain with the Giants, helping lead a New York defense that constantly pressured opposing quarterbacks.

Of course, Pierce was a member of the Giants team that defeated the Patriots in Super Bowl XLII, but his presence on New England's team in 2010 might help the Patriots reach Super Bowl XLV.
