With Liverpool’s need for width never more apparent than during Sunday’s 3-1 defeat at Upton Park, the Reds have again been linked with a move for Dutch international Eljero Elia.

That move, however, could have happened earlier, as Liverpool apparently was planning to bring Elia in during the January transfer window, according to The People.

Interest in the move, however, waned due to Roy Hodgson‘s exit, and Elia stayed in Hamburg where he has been unsettled this season.

Still, Liverpool management is again interested in Elia and is apparently plotting a summer move for the pacy wide man. A £5 million ($8.1 million) price tag has been floated, but according to Hamburg director Bastian Reinhardt, the fee would be much higher than that.

Elia is also said to be of interest to other clubs as well.

“I would love to play at such a special club like Real Madrid, FC Barcelona or Manchester United,” the Dutchman recently told Bild. “There I can still get better.”

Fellow Dutchman Dirk Kuyt, however, is said to be trying to convince Elia to make the move to Anfield instead.
