Wayne Rooney increased Manchester United’s chances of beating Bayern Munich in the UEFA Champions League quarterfinals with a wink, a smile … and a dive.
In the 90th minute of Tuesday’s 1-1 draw between the clubs, Bayern Munich midfielder Bastian Schweinsteiger made a slide tackle on Rooney, which prompted the Manchester United forward to throw himself to the ground in apparent agony.
An unimpressed Schweinsteiger chided Rooney with a harsh word and a finger wave. Rooney responded with a smirk.
But Rooney’s ruse worked, as the referee showed Schweinsteiger a yellow card — his second of the game — then a red one. That means Schweinsteiger will miss the second leg of the two-game series, which takes place next Wednesday in Munich.
See Rooney’s dive and Schweinsteiger’s reaction below.
