The Liverpool striker put his country ahead 1-0 when he collected a loose ball from close range, spun off his marker and fired it past the goalkeeper.

The game marked a half-century of appearances for the Uruguayan marksman and the goal was his 22nd in international play.

With the win, Uruguay got its 2014 World Cup qualification campaign off to a positive start, taking all three points from the opener.
